The overheating should be separated from the wrong vmm32 VxDs loaded. The easiest way would be to start the computer with the plain DOS boot disk and let it run some DOS program for several minutes. If that crashes, it is the heat problem. There still could remain a Windows configuration problem for the motherboard. He should still reinstall Windows (into the old windows directory to preserve other software installations), and he can do the reinstall from the DOS 7.x which would be on the Windows recovery diskette (to be able to recognize fat32 drives).
