There are two issues:

1.  In linux, xboard works fine.  Anybody can join the now huge list of
xboard/winboard compatible engines.

2.  If you write your own, you have to use xwindows graphical calls.  X
has been around 10 years longer than windows, but Microsoft didn't choose
to adopt the X standard.  Which means that if you roll your own GUI, you
will have to roll two versions (compare xboard and winboard sources to see
what Tim Mann does here).  Two versions of something is always gross...
