Subject: Origin of chess programs/computers names

Hi I just discovered on the britannica on line that "Mephisto" was the name of a
fake automatic chess playing machine, the last incarnation of the famous Turc.
This suggests that the various Mephitos around got the name from this.

Is there any other origin of computer chess anmes which is historically
particularly interesting/tricky?

By the way did anybody ever creatre a program called Turc?

I found a very interesting info about a real playing machine that was invented
as far as in 1890 and was able to play some endgames. I always tought that the
oldest automatic "chess" machine was also the first computer chess programm, a
program running on the computers of Los Alamos in the 50s and able to play a
Bishop-less chess on a 6x6 board.

regards
Franz
