I've been happy with fritz 5.32 and its ability to load winboard engines. Of
course i have winboard as well and can load my own engines but the fritz
interface is slick and i like how it supplies a large opening book to some of
the programs that dont have them. I did order gromit 3.1 i think it was, one of
the young talents becuase i heard it was a positional program and I liked the
gromit 2 that i downloaded but it never came despite sending 25 bucks to
chessbase. They did send me notice that they got my money so at least that part
was not screwed up :).
I dont think i would buy another fritz as the engine is allready strong
enought to beat me a under 2000 player. But I am interested in hiaracs and in
particlular this new rebel cd with 3 programs i keep hearing about. How much
does the rebel cd cost?
I dont think you need to buy all the latest commercial programs to keep up
with computer chess. There are tons of free winboard ones that meet most needs
of chess playing. Its nice to have at least one multipurpose commercial program
for things like analisis of your games and database features but thats about it.
