Subject: The Gambit Tiger bites again !

Author: Peter Berger

Date: 11:09:27 10/04/00

While at blitz games the more traditional Tiger 12.95 BETA seems to be stronger
at longer
time controls the brand new and experimental "Gambit Tiger" BETA _really_ seems
to kick ass :-)

It reminds me of the ChessSystemTal II when I see one major difference : when
endgame
starts Tiger gets back to its usual cold-blooded self .

Some more games ; played on 2 PIII500s , 128 MB RAM , CM6k03ss10 is Chessmaster
6000 ( Patch
version 1.03 ) with Selectivity=10 using 64 MB Hash where "Gambit Tiger" BETA
uses 48 MB hash.

Time control is 60 10 : this means game in 60 minutes with 10 seconds increment
per move (
Fisher time control )

Comments to first game :

Gambit Tiger chooses a very aggressive setup ; after the very optimistic
17. ...Rf6 ?! ( 17. ...c5 !? ) , 18. ...Rh6!? Chessmaster plays the IMO very
clever 19. h4 ! which leaves the king side well defended with King and
Knight where Black's Queen and Rook suddenly look akwardly placed but Tiger
finds his way
back . The nice-looking 30. ed ?! with the idea 32. c5 looked promising but the
free pawn on
b7 proves to be a reliability rather than a strength . So probably 30. ed ? is
the decisive
mistake and 30. Qxd4 would have been necessary with about equal chances ; the
nice
liquidation 31. ... Nxg3 , 32. ... Qxd4 , 33. ... Ne2+ adds a little final
brilliancy to the game :)

Comments to second game :

As usual Chessmaster is out of book early but seemed to have managed to equalize
. Probably
12. ... h5?! and 13. ... h4?! are over-optimistic . With 15. ... 0-0-0
Chessmaster seems
to castle into it . Interesting is to compair the eval ; after 19. ... Rhe8
Chessmaster sees
itself up by about half a pawn where the Gambit Tiger judges more than a pawn up
for itself. .

22. ...Qxa2 ? Chessmaster thinks half a pawn up for itself where Gambit Tiger
answers 23.
c5 ! judging +2.26 at depth 11 .

23. .. b5 ( Chessmaster still thinks up half a pawn ) , Tiger 24. Qf3 +2.22 at
depth 13.

24. ...e4 ( CM still up half a pawn ) , Tiger 25. Bxc7 +2.80 .

25 . .. Kxc6 ( CM still .... :-) ) , Tiger 26. Qf4+ +2.20

26. ... Kb7 ( and still ... :-) ) , Tiger 27. c4 +2.94

27. ... Rxd4 ( guess yourself :) ) , Tiger 28. cb +2.90

28. ... Qd2 ( and still ..) , Tiger 29. Qg4 +3.18

29. ... Rd7 ( and still ..) , Tiger 30. bc+ +4.98 !!

30. ... Kxc6 ( and still !! ) , Tiger 31. Ra3 +5.26 !!

31. ... a5 ( and still !!! ) , Tiger 32. Rab3 +6.36 !!!

32. ... Ree7 ( and here CM gets the fail-low at last to 2.36 )

This means Tiger was 11 moves earlier with judgement !! I have never seen
something like this
before between top programs !

The rest is silence ...

Cheers.

pete

PS : new kind of live commentary tried for first time ; two comps for the games
; one for the
report :-) , started writing after first game finished ; it's currently not
even played this 32. ... Ree7 ; new kind of real-time report for me ...,
ah , now it happened :)
