Are there any chess programs today -

Yes, there are, Dan, and I had the ignominious job of playing against 2 of them!
While I know you are writing about OTB chess, I couldn't resist the temptation
to put in a plug for my niche, Correspondence Chess. Sorry Dan ;) I mean well.

As you know, both Fritz 6a and Nimzo 7.32 searched and are still searching 17-24
plies deep against me, not counting extensions that go much deeper. Now I have a
feeling for what Garry Kasparov experienced versus Deeper Blue.

I read here about 6 months ago where somebody posted a quote from the IBM team
saying that Deeper Blue needed to search 14-15 plies deep in order to defeat
Kasparov. I'm sure that 14-15 plies from Deeper Blue are of greater value than
18 plies from Nimzo 7.32, but I can tell you that it still plays frighteningly
strong in computer friendly positions...wide open board with lot's of actively
placed pieces (see Nimzo 7.32-Ham).

For those of you who want a real challenge and want to experience what it's like
to meet Deeper Blue head on, play a "Correspondence Chess" style game against
your own computer where you have only the aid of books...no computer assistance
in generating your moves. It's pretty tough to beat the silicon beasts now if
they are allowed to search at least 16-17 plies deep (minimum) before their
moves are selected.

Good luck and happy chess!

All the best,

Steve
