The two ways are only superficially similar. There should be a button equivalent
to "unsubscribe" where you're off any list, any count, any emailing, any future
CCC statistics or contacts. Moderation decisions have to have measurable
consequences. If a set of moderators and their decisions results in instant
halving the membership count, that stimulates changes toward improvements, in
individual moderators and in the whole system. Merely withdrawing ones
contributions doesn't have nearly as positive effect.
