I agree with you that SSDF is a scientific attempt to set a rating with probably a good result, but also a lot of critics about the correcteness of the same results. I would not blaim Kasparov if he says: I take the first on SSDF list (which list: now? next? on average? or that of the week before the match?), I take the winner of the last WC, or the winner of a tournament made on purpose, or the most succesfull in WCs of recent year, or just Fritz because they put a a big stake and it is among the best, or Rebel o Hiarcs because they are known to be well doing against humans, or Crafty to honor Bob huge effort in the history of free chess programs, or any other based on any criterion he likes. For sure to take Shredder because of its results is one possible criterion, and it would make a lot of sense to me. Writing this I realised that it would be nice to have a Candidates Tournament to selct the pretender! regards Franz
