Rebel Tiger does not support many ways of customizing the engine ( at least not
for us users :) ).

But the Rebel Century Engine contest you mentioned is most interesting I think .

When I try to conclude from the reactions I think that probably a few hundred
people tried to find better settings , or to make it safe :100+ .

While a few interesting ones were found none that were better in real games were
discovered , while a "simple" change : reducing chess knowledge from 100% to 25
% ( Century 1.2 ) would have made it .

But why would one like to lessen "chess knowledge" ? It simply is not known to
the user what "chess knowledge" really means , or mobility or King safety . So
the chance that a better setting is found is very little . And if it were known
you still would have to be able to understand what this means _and_ come about
with better ideas ..

Same goes for the CM settings IMHO ; while it seems to be proved that putting
selectivity up and adjust Hashtables ( something that somehow suggests itself
with the hardware improvements made in the meantime ) I suspect no significant
discovery has been made so far .

I still read the CM posts from time to time as some of them are pretty amusing
and it's funny to watch that every time another one seems to win :)

And every week there is something new : CMKing+++ , Test23 and so on .

It might be possible that one of them is much better than the default settings ;
but I really wonder how one should find out in this mess .

Still the CM tournaments do have their fans and as long as the others have the
chance to identify them ( example by Subject line ) I really don't think they do
any harm to anybody .
