How could this be a surprise for both of them? Kramnik was the one who chose to
play the Berlin's defence, unless

a) You are sugguesting a finger slip? (Perhaps he forgot he hasn't played a6
yet?)

or

b) Kramnik didn't expect a ruy lopez and was expecting say Scotch? Highly
unlikely if you ask me..

A surprise (minor one) perhaps for Kasparov..But for both of them?
