True. But i suppose to win , you must have had an advanatage at least once in the game! In fact, you could be losing all the way, untill your opponent blundered by giving you a forced mate. The psoition after your opponent blundered you had the advanatage! But I know what you mean, it's hard to tell whether you have advanatage, though sometimes it's clear you don't have a advanatage..Eg beginner attack with scholar mate etc.. >I can learn nothing from steinitz rules.
