Yes I found the problem! I was trying to be too clever with Null moves, by attempting to predict if it would be successful - once I ripped this code out it performed as exected. It now searches 1400 kn in ~ 9 secs to complete 9 ply. The only problem now is that I see that the first move cutoff ratio is only 84% - far too low! Thanks to you all for the help! Steve
