Yes, normally that works. But some crashes cause Win95/98 to mess up autoexec & config files (including their *.win copies) resulting in going back to stand alone DOS, no matter how you exit or invoke WIN program. I have had my computer do it, 2 computers my kids use, as well as my brother's. The easiest reliable way I found to get out of this weird looping mode is to copy autoexec.bat & config.sys files (including their *.dos & *.win versions) that existed in windows over the current ones (in stand alone DOS), then reboot. One only has to save these 3 pairs of files while everything was working Ok, from windows, into a safe place, then restore them in case of trouble. I suspect the cause is some miscalculation in Win98 boot manager overwrite/rename logic as they juggle between these 3 pairs of files, changing *.win or *.dos file pair into the .sys/.bat extensions and back. Some other variable (toggled incorrectly by the crash or hard reset) misclues the rename logic in which state it is and it overwrites the wrong pair of files, leaving two *.dos versions active for what should be distinct *.win and *.dos copies.
