One time I asked for a moderator to delete a paragraph out of a post that I
wrote.  I was told that this wasn't possible (and potentially not desirable, due
to the possibility of abuse).  So they deleted the message, and I reposted the
part I wanted there.

I did this a couple of times while I was a moderator, e.g. I would explain to
the user why I deleted a post, provided them with the text of the post, and
clarified that they were free to repost it if they got rid of the swearing in
the third paragraph or whatever the problem was.  This seemed to work well.
