Go up one level in this thread
(this was originally about MacChess and Hiarcs on Macintosh)
A couple of weeks I began to do matches Genius5/Tiger on a PC computer
under Windows 95. After some games I discovered that Genius, Windows
version, was stealing a lot of CPU time from the poor Tiger, running in
a Dos box.
(don't start a Dos obstinacy thread here, please)
So I had to use the Dos version of Genius5 to make the match fair. I
took special care of the "Dos box properties". You have to check
"Background - Always suspend" and to set the "Wait sensitivity" to the
lowest (sorry these are a translation of the french words, I don't know
the terms used in the english version). So both programs are given full
CPU time when they are in the foreground. I use Alt-Tab to switch
between them.
Of course, you have to disable permanent brain! My goal is not to check
the efficiency of my permanent brain, I just want to compare the two
engines. By doing this I also avoid small inequalities in operator time.
So if you do matches between Windows programs on the same computer, be
careful!
