It seems to me it was a matter of picking the right thing out of the makefile.
Someone'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you'd need to uncomment the
freebds area maybe.  Maybe.

But you'll never get the speed that you get from the Crafty that you download at
the ftp, it's just not going to happen with Cygwin, probably not anything else
either.
