> Maybe IBM payed him to let Deep Blue win. I don't think they had an explicit deal for Kasparov to lose. It would be too damaging (for both) if it were to leak out. But, if your boss at work were to challenge you to a game of chess, you might not wish to savage him as brutally as you objectively could. You might naturally take it easy, without even consciously having any intent to do so. Although, Kasparov and IBM weren't in that exact relation, there was some similarity, maybe just enough to subconsciously dull his egde a bit.
