I'm thinking of spending some money on chess engines. I'm definitely going
to get the rebel 11 package because as a winboard programmer i can use it to
play pulsar on internet and get it to use books created under that interface
rather than worry about figuring out how to read pgn files which i would have to
do to make a bigger book.
In addtion i spend quite a bit of time playing engines under fritz 5.32
interface. i have many winboard engines that run there. But i have the fritz 6
demo and its a nicer interface. Also i get crashes in 5.32 from time to time and
I think maybe the fritz 6 interface would be more stable. But i dont want
another fritz engine. So basicly the choice is young talents and junior 6 which
both run off the fritz 6 interface I believe. Which would you recomend? I have
actually allready purchased gromit 3.1 from chessbase under engines direct. Also
some of the young talents seem to be available for free such as phalanx and
goliath 2000. So i'm leaning toward junior 6 which seems to offer a quality
engine for a slightly cheaper price which i cant download for free any earlier
versions.
Finnaly i'm considering getting chessmaster 7000 or 8000. I'm mainly
considering this because i've heard good things about its many playing styles
and i understand its relatively inexpensive. But i dont want burdemsome copy
protection. I read on the fact section of chessmaster 7000 that it doesnt need
the cd to play but it refuels. Is this true and is the refueling infrequent? I
heard something hear that chessmaster 8000 may require the cd at all times. And
i saw that chessmaster 6000 requires the cd at all times on a review page. So
chessmaster 7000 seems like the best buy and maybe after chessmaster 8000 comes
out, 7000 might be discounted i'm thinking.
I probably wont do this all at once. I might buy the chessbase engine this
week but i'll wait tell novemeber or december for chessmaster and i'll probably
get the junior 11 package in early novemeber. And i may not bother with
chessmaster seeing that i have quite a few engines allready. Just depends on hwo
good a deal I find on it.
