I think you know I'm not a M$ fan, but this time I'm not too unhappy with the
new OS.

But don't use it alone. Alone, it is the usual big shit (bigger than before by
the way). Forces you to upgrade RAM, disk and even processor. Forces you to use
IE5.5. Sends who knows what to Bill's databases. Does not smell good.

Use it with 98lite IV professional version ($25), and you'll be able to remove
the shit from Windows ME (and also from Win98 and Win98SE). What's left is a
more stable and lighter OS, which can be pleasant to use.

You'll discover how Windows can be fast and small, and can still run on small
computers.

Just be warned that you will lose the real mode DOS with WinME. You still have
the fully functionnal DOS boxes (which can use EMM and XMS). But you can't boot
in DOS directly (however you can still do it by booting from a WinME boot
floppy). This could prevent you from using some chess programs that need to be
booted in pure DOS without HIMEM. You could use them only by booting DOS from a
floppy.

98lite should simply be provided by Microsoft. That would certainly reduce the
complains about their Win98 and WinME bloated OS.
