So you are potentially the next 98lite user.
98lite is a terrific utility that will reconcile you with Windows.
It will let you REMOVE from Windows 98, Windows 98SE and Windows ME a lot of
useless things that slow down the OS and make it crash often.
Initially, 98lite was designed to remove Internet Explorer from Windows 98
(Internet Explorer: the biggest virus ever written).
MS wants us to believe that IE is part of the OS, but it is not true. It can be
removed, and Windows feels much better without IE (and your computer too, and
you as well).
When you remove IE from Windows, suddenly browsing thru the folders becomes much
faster (remember the speed of Win95?). You can also remove all the childish
looking webbified stuff from your folders explorer. What a relieve! And you keep
all the other advantages of the 98 explorer.
If you want, you can get an even faster browsing explorer by reinstalling the
one that was provided with Windows 95! This option can be useful on very slow
computers.
That's also the beauty of 98lite: with this utility, old slow computers like
486dx-2 66 and below come back to life! It's almost impossible to install and
run Windows 98 on a 486-33 for example. With 98lite, it's not a problem anymore.
And you get a system with is very up to date (you can install WinME for example
and get the latest in hardware support), and which is as fast as Windows 95! It
is even possible to run Windows 98/ME on a 486-33 with 4Mb of RAM. OK, it will
be slow, but try to do it without 98lite!
It is actually possible to get a system which will be faster than Windows 95.
With 98lite you can remove many useless things that you could not even remove
with Windows 95. For example, if you don't care about an ISDN connection, why
would you keep it on your system? Why would you keep the Internet Installation
Wizard if you know how to put your ISP's address directly into the TCP/IP config
screen? Why would you keep Internet Exploiter and Outlook if you want to use
Opera and the free Kaufman Mail Warrior?
You can remove almost everything from the OS, and the best is to come: actually
all these components become optional components that you can check/uncheck in
the Windows Installation screen! There is no need to run an exotic program to
remove these components, it's actually the standard Windows installation system
that will take care of this!
This guarantees that:
* it is reliable
* you can reinstall the components at any time without much trouble!
With 98lite you can really get a smaller Windows 98/ME that works perfectly and
faster than ever. The "98micro" installation option lets you for example install
a 70Mb Windows! And you will need less RAM to have a decent working system.
Actually you don't even need to reinstall Windows. 98lite can act as an
installer, but it can also remove the fat from an already installed system. Both
ways work very well, I have tried both myself.
98lite is a terrific utility that should definitely be shipped with Windows
itself.
You can download a free version at www.98lite.net. The free version lets you
remove a lot of things and is very useful. It will work with all flavors of
Windows 98.
If you want to remove the fat from Windows ME, or if you want to remove even
more things than with the free version, you can get 98lite IV professional for
$25. I have bought it a few days ago, and it works very well.
I would advice to all people annoyed by the size and sluggishness of Windows
98/ME to invest half a day in downloading and trying the free version of 98lite.
If you are concerned by security issues (M$ looking at what's on your hard disk
for example), same advice for you.
Thanks to Didzis Cirulis who has pointed me to 98lite a few months ago.
