The Windows Operating System is a very modular system. I can't deny that
Microsoft has done a great job.
But Microsoft uses this modularity to his own advantage. For example modularity
allows to update the system by replacing only small parts, which can be done
over the Internet. Updates to the system can also be provided with other
products. It is the case with Office for example, which updates many system
DLLs. That's a direct advantage of modularity.
Microsoft does not want the OS to be smaller and faster, because they earn money
from each new sold computer. With each release of Windows, Microsoft tries hard
to make it bigger and slower, in order to push consumers to buy a new computer
(most people do not know how to upgrade just a part of the computer).
With each new PC sold, you get a new copy of Windows. From a legal point of
view, you can ask your dealer to remove Windows from the package if you already
own it, but very few people do that. I guess many people don't know they can,
and other people think that the copy sold with the computer will work better on
this computer than a plain vanilla copy of Windows (which is almost always
wrong).
The consequence is that 1 PC sold = 1 copy of Windows sold, and this is making
Microsoft richer and richer every year.
Some people call this system a "tax on computers". It is very close to this
actually.
98lite uses the modularity of Windows to the CONSUMER's advantage. 98lite is not
a program that will delete a lot of files "manually" on your computer. Actually
98lite does its job in a very clean way. It uses the internal
installation/uninstallation language of Windows to tell the OS to remove some
optional components. Then, it's Windows itself who makes the job.
For example, you can find an utility on www.98lite.net which allows you to
remove Internet Explorer. This utility is not an EXE file. It's a script written
in the Windows installation language. It's a text file with the ".INF"
extension. When you use it, it is actually Windows itself which reads the file
and removes what must be removed. In the process, Windows keeps track of what
has been removed, and that's why it is always possible to put the components
back to their original places.
Once 98lite is installed, you don't need to run it again. To remove or put back
components, you go to the regular "Windows installation" screen. You use the
normal procedure. The difference with 98lite, is that now your "Windows
installation" screen has a lot more of optional components that you can
add/remove. You will see how many useless stuffs Microsoft installs on your
computer. Just remove them! And if by chance you need one of them, just put it
back in less than a minute!
It's very simple to use actually. And pretty safe.
