I think Bob Hyatt does this in Crafty, but I am not sure. If checks and mate threats are so important in the chess variants you are interested in, then you can try what I do in The Crazy Bishop : I search checks in the q-search only at the first ply of the q-search. I limit this to the case when there has been a check or a mate threat on one of the two previous moves. Mate threats are detected when a null move search fails low with a mate score. I never allow the king to stand pat when it is in check after such a q-search check, but I do in other cases (a capture that happens to give check by chance). Remi
