I have SEEn (sorry!) this in an article by the Sprackelens in BYTE.
Their SEE was a rather inexact one, just counting the number of
attacking pawns, knights, bishops etc. I think this was later implemented
in one of the gnuchess versions.

Then I read an article in ICCAJ about some capture strength heuristic.
I remember that the author tried it on shogi and was pleased with the
result.
