He was hoping that Gandalf would be closer at longer timecontrols, which proved to be true. His estimate after the beta testing period was difference of 50 elo. You can ask him yourself if you don't believe me or alternatively read the newsticker. He thought that Gandalf was one of the best engines for analysis due to its testscores. There's a difference.
