For Kasparov, being World Champion means everything. It's not just a title, it's his identity. No way would he willingly give it away to anyone, protege or not. And he has good reason to be "friendly" to Kramnik at this point: as the new World Champion, Kramnik is going to have a lot of power in the chess world.
