In my program, positions with a score of 2.0 or fairly common, but I
don't think I've ever seen 3. The exception to this is in the endgame
where a passed pawn can be calculated to promote formulaicly if the
opposing side has only the king and possibly other pawns (but not other
pieces). So if a passed pawn can promote at will, I give this position
an added value of 8.0 (queen - pawn).
