If you like playing against various personalities (as in CM6000,7000,8000), then
Fritz offers less variety. Fritz 6 does not have personalities, but it can be
tweaked via an aggressiveness parameter (a number from -2 to +2 if my memory
serves me). This is a lot less customizable than CM 6000 however. IMHO, Fritz
6 is easier for me to analyze games with. As I recall, the CM series does NOT
offer an analysis mode where you just make moves and the program immediately
starts analysing the current position. Why they have not implemented this over
the years is a mystery to me.

If you want both of those features, then perhaps Rebel 11.0 is the best of both
worlds. One possible objection you would have to that is the DOS interface, but
I actually like that interface as it is very full featured. It is not as
graphically pretty as a Fritz 6 or CM 6000 interface, but very useful and well
thought out all the same. I run Rebel almost every single day on my computers,
I rarely run CM 6000. This is largely due to reasons above -- analysis mode and
personalities both in one package. If DOS and Century 3.0 turn you off, then on
the same Rebel 11 CD is Tiger (and its cousin Gambit Tiger) both of which offer
GUIs (i.e. not DOS) and an analysis mode. The GUI takes a little getting used
to, but it works well and I now like it. When you first started using CM, you
had to get used to their GUI anyway, so ...

Hopefully this helps you some,

Roy
