It's more because of the TV series. A lot of the humor, when there is humor,
goes right over their heads through no fault of their own (language, American
pop-culture references, incompetent dubbing, etc...), and to top it off, the
kids gobble it up as one of those typical (and unexplainable) teen fads, causing
yet more resentment as Americans are blamed for the dagradation of the national
youths' IQ.

As an American who lived in Europe for over 10 years (including my entire
adolescence), I was often the target of this resentment: "Why do you
Americans...?" or "How come Americans...(place any silly generalization here)?".
:-)  To make things worse, whenever I tried to show this was not so, with myself
as the prime example, it was quickly dismissed with: "yeah, but you've been
living here for so long, you're not a real American." Thanks.

Eventually, I wised up and stopped trying: "You're right, it's strange that the
entire American people subsist exclusively on hamburgers and fries. Perhaps they
have no taste buds."
