I am very pleased with my PalmIIIe which I used FastCPU and Quickbits to enhance. Of course I used it to indulge in Chess Genius 1.2 everyday. Back in the old days, I used to have the Novag VIP and the Kasparov Travel Champion (the peg one, not the desktop). I still have them and they are not at all easy to beat. I think these handhelds also run at 16mHz, pity these oldies-programs are not ported over to the Palm (altho' I can see why nobody would want to that. It is tantamount to fixing up a really old car at alot of time and expense).
