I agree that Kramnik is now the world champion ... who else would be? Kasparov hasn't beaten Kramnik since 1997 (he has not defeated him in 26 games at traditional time control of 40/2, while losing to Kramnik 3 times during this span). Kramnik not only has a higher rating than Anand, Shirov, Morosevich, Adams, etc, but also a much better record vs Kasparov and a better tournament record in the last few years). OK, Gazza's tourney record is the best lately, but head-to-head, Kramnik has proven his superiority over him. How about Karpov? No way ... he may be the 20th best player around now. Khalifman? No way would anyone but his mother consider him the world's best chessplayer. His tournament results (other than Vegas) are no big deal and he was rated 42nd in the world when he won the "World Championship" that was sponsored by a corrupt FIDE. Right after winning his "title" he had his butt convincingly beated by I believe the #5 or #6 player in the world. (Wasn't it 4.5-1.5 or 5-1?). Kramnik richly deserves his crown. He may not be as "perky" in personality as some would like him to be, but he is a nicer and MUCH more likeable guy than Gazza. Congrats to Volodya!! (Kramnik's nickname) By the way, Kramnik's new book is very well done and the games and annotations are marvellous, although the bio stuff is second rate. Mark A.
