The champion was a good champion, but the federation was not a good federation.
So all hell broke loose. I think FIDE is the best organization to administer
the title in the long term. But they messed up and the title has left.

The title needs to be reunified.

Fischer may have had some claim to the title if he had not gone insane and gone
into a bunker for twenty years. Like it or not, we got Karpov, and eventually
Kasparov. Kasparov left FIDE but he still played championship matches against
strong players, so I think a good argument can be made for the legitimacy of
that title. Now Kramnik has it.

That's my opinion. I think that others could have the opinion that Khalifman is
the champion. Shirov, bless him, has not beaten the reigning champion, any way
you slice it, so it is difficult to call him champion of anything.

I think we have three guys who deserve to fight it out for the real title. I'm
not sure how this can be accomplished, but I hope that they do end up playing
against each other in official matches at some point.

I would think that this is probably possible since there seems to be a lot of
money out there.
