Subject: private "FICS" server for home-LAN

I am wondering whether it is possible to install
something like a local/private "FICS" server in a home-LAN so that
chess programs can auto-play over the home-LAN avoiding the
autoplayer connection between two machines. I read in some
FAQ that the code of the FICS server is free and can be
found somewhere (to be precise:caissa.onenet.net).

Despite the fact that caissa.onenet.net is down or cannot
be reached for some reasons, I am not sure whether such
an intallation of a private/local "FICS" server really works.

Two questions:
1. is the FICS server code really free and where can I get it
2. is it straight forward to install a private client/server
   connection in a LAN.
3. are there better/other solution to play over ethernet connections

Thanks for any advise!

Joachim
