An obsolete but mostly useable version is free, the version that
FICS uses now is private.

Sure it would work, assuming that you are running on unix.

There is an open source chess server based off of the obsolete FICS
code names chessd, homepage chessd.sourceforge.net

That depends on your level of knowlege, it is not intended to be
hard to do.
