I suspect that, with many databases, storage of plain text in database fields is
significantly more space efficient than OS text files.

I don't know how one would do the import programatically. But I think it ought
to be possible (I could be wrong). If it can be, it might even be possible to
retain the discussion format, using Acrobat's twisties to navigate the threads.

This is one benefit. The really obvious benefits are that there are Unix and Mac
PDF file readers, and Acrobat readers all have search facilities.
