Subject: just learning

I am currently learning how to play chess. Could someone please
recommend a shareware or freeware program that would be appropriate for
a beginner and where to download it from. I have win95. The game must
have solo play capability and various difficulty levels. Eventually i
would like to buy a more complete, higher quality program. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. thanks, paul.
     p.s. I tried to download a couple of games already, but they didn`t
work. I think they required MEDIA PLAYER which i do not have.
