Since you just want to have fun with chess programming i think you can use almost every language you want, as long as it gives you enough features to work with. From this point of view, visual basic is ok since i've managed to write an engine myself, called "LarsenVB", with this language, using the C source code from an old version of Faile as a starting point; personally i think that the 2 big disadvantages over C are: 1) Speed - since you can't reach the same performance of a C engine 2) Samples - since almost all the source code samples you can find are written in C apart from this you can do lot of good things whit VB, even a Winboard compatible engine (since you don't have to be a "console" program to read standard input/output); you can have a look at LarsenVB's home page http://space.tin.it/clubnet/ludormio where you will find the engine itself complete with the full VB source code Enjoy Luca
