Ke3 Ka2 <HT> 1.Kxg3 Kd4 2.h6 Ke3 3.h7 f2 4.h8Q f1Q 5.Qe5+ Kd2 6.Qd4+! [Congratualations on finding a cook! This study appears to have 2 solutions unless I'm missing something subtle. The one given by Kashdan follows: 6.Qf4+ Qxf4+ 7.Kxf4 b5 8.h5 b4 9.h6 b3 10.h7 b2 11.h8Q b1Q 12.Qd4+ Ke2 13.Qe4+ Qxe4+ 14.Kxe4 b5 15.h4 Kd2 16.Kd4 Kc2 17.Kc5 Kc3 18.h5 (18.Kxb5? Kd4=) 18...b4 19.h6 b3 20.h7 b2 21.h8Q+ wins] 6...Kc2 7.Qf2+ Qxf2+ 8.Kxf2 b5 9.h5 b4 10.h6 b3 11.h7 b2 12.h8Q b1Q 13.Qh7+ Kc1 14.Qxb1+ Kxb1 15.Ke3? [But here Crafty goes astray. Better is 15.h4 b5 16.h5 b4 17.h6 b3 18.h7 b2 19.h8Q wins] 15...Ka2? [Black draws with 15...b5 16.Kd3 (16.Kd4 b4 17.Kc4 Kc2 18.Kxb4 Kd3=; 16.h4 b4 17.h5 b3 18.h6 b2 19.h7 Kc2=) 16...Ka2 (16...b4 17.Kc4 Kc2 18.Kxb4 Kd3=) 17.Kc3 Ka3 18.Kc2 Ka2 19.Kc3=] 16.Kd4 Kb3 17.Kc5 Kc3 [Or 17...b5 18.Kxb5 Kc3 19.Kc5 Kd3 20.Kd5 Ke3 21.Ke5 Kf3 22.Kf5 wins] 18.h4 b5 19.h5 b4 20.h6 b3 21.h7 b2 22.h8Q+ wins I don't trust computer evaluations like "6.49" in endings like this and I think with good reason, since in this case Crafty led itself astray. Obviously with EGTBs, this study would be no problem for Crafty, though I think it would then have found the solution given by Kashdan instead, since a 5-man ending occurs sooner there. Can you verify this for sure?
