Some test positions. It starts with a "relatively easy" combination from the
historical Kecskemet tournament:
[D]rn1qr1k1/p3bppp/bp3n2/2p2N2/2Q5/3BB1N1/PPP2PPP/2KR3R w - - 0 14 bm Nh6+; id
"Alekhine-Tartakower 1927";
14.Nh6+!! The game continued 14...gxh6 15.Bxh7+ Nxh7 16.Qg4+ Kh8 17.Rxd8 Rxd8
18.Qe4 Nc6 19.Qxc6 Bf8 20.Nf5 Bc4 21.Bxh6 Bd5 22.Qc7 Rac8 23.Qf4 Rc6 24.Bxf8
Rxf8 25.Qe5+ Nf6 26.Nd6 1-0
[D]3R4/4r1kp/6p1/P4p2/5P2/6P1/6KP/8 w - - 0 1 bm Rd2; id "Testposition CSS
4/99";
I'm sure most programmers have implemented the rule "rook behind the passed
pawn". Does it work (1.Rd2 Ra7 2.Ra2; otherwise black brings his rook behind the
pawn)? IIRC, I was told that Averbakh says only 1.Rd2 wins.
[D]r3k3/2Qp3R/1p6/1b2K3/4p3/8/5p2/8 w q - 0 1 bm Kd4; id "Zepler # in 4, Die
Schwalbe 1929";
The mate in 4 (!) starts with 1.Kd4. Make sure that black has the long castling
right in your program, that's why there is no "true" position repetition here:
1.Kd4 {threats 2.Qe5+ and 3.#} (1.Qd6? 0-0-0) 1...Ra4+ 2.Ke5 Ra8 3.Qd6 1-0.
[D]1q6/r4pbk/1r1p2pp/B2Pn3/Q2NP3/1p3P2/6PP/1R3RK1 b - - 0 32 bm Rxa5; id
"Baumbach-Nienhuis corr. 1989";
Difficult. 32...Rxa5!! 33.Qxa5 Nc4 34.Qc3 Rb4! 35.Kh1 Na5 0-1 (and ...Qb6, white
looses the pinned knight).
[D]4r3/1p4R1/1p5p/3p3P/2pPbQP1/2P4k/1q3P2/6RK w - - 0 1 bm Qxe4; id "Super
Constellation-Avantgarde (analysis)";
What would you play here?
1.Qxe4 (1.f3 {wrong} Qf2 2.Rf7 Bd3 3.g5 Qxg1+! 4.Kxg1 Re1+ 5.Kf2 Re2+ 6.Kf1 Re4+
{Draw!}) 1...dxe4 (1...Rxe4 2.Rg3+ Kh4 3.Kg2 {is lost as well}) 2.Rg3+ Kh4 3.Kg2
Qxc3 {# in 3} (3...Qxf2+ 4.Kxf2 Ra8 {delays the mate}) 4.Rxc3 1-0
Some results (PIII/700 MHz, 32 MB Hash, 4-piece tb's, H7.32 GUI) from Hiarcs
7.32, Crafty 16.6 (CB native version), Little Goliath 2000a and Fritz 5.32 for
comparison:
Position H 7.32 Cr16.6 LG 2Ka F 5.32
-------------------------------------------------------
Alekhine-Tartakower 0:00 0:19(1) 0:03 ?
Testpostion CSS 4/99 ? ? ? ?
Zepler, # in 4 0:00 0:02 ? - (2)
Baumbach-Nienhuis 1:15(3) ? ? ?
SC - AV (analysis) 0:01 0:06 0:00 0:00
1) Crafty 16.6 has Nh6 after 0:01, but temporarily switches to Qa4 after 0:12
2) Fritz 5.32 finds a mate in 8 (0:01) and stops the analysis
3) Hiarcs 7.32 has Rxa5 earlier (0:06...0:20), but temporarily switches to
32...b2
Execept for Hiarcs, these are not the most recent versions of the programs. If
someone notices distinct improvements of the results with a new version, please
post. Thanks.
