I had wondered whether wininit.exe was an important component of Windows or just a part of the worm. The problem is that the worm infects wininit.exe with a virus that Norton Antivirus (2001) couldn't remove. Instead it recommended deletion/replacement. I just looked and I still have a wininit.exe, so I must either have replaced it somehow, or perhaps the utility offered by distributed.net repaired it... -Dan.
