The pgn extension identifies a text file that is a game listing conforming to the PGN specification (hopefully). fen is analogous for representing a specific position. This is what we use to create diagrams here, e.g. [D]7K/8/k1P5/7p/8/8/8/8 w - - for more information, at ICC you can type "help pgn-spec"
