In my two volumes Averbakh endgames book(s), I cannot find the position. I think it must be from another book of him. Btw, the original recent discussion regarding this position was about learning, where programs can't learn that 1.a6 is wrong (as it was said to be), because the evaluation would be still better than after 1.Rd2 Ra7 2.Ra2. After I doubted that 1.Rd2 is the only winning move, I was told on a message board - I forgot where and from whom - that Averbakh says so, and this is not one of the exceptional cases where covering the the pawn from the side is better than from behind (or at least equal). I would have to be a much stronger player to either acknowledge or refute that, but my doubts continue as seemingly no program plays Rd2. Regards, M.Scheidl
