You can play deep endgames well without tablebases if you evaluate the positions reasonably. e.g. I know of one program that evaluates KBN vs. KB as +4 and desperately needs the tablebases to set it right. A program that evaluates it much closer to zero would do ok. There are some genuine wins based on tablebases, e.g. Shredder vs. Rebel in Paderborn WCCC. Amir
