I've been taking a close look at the following game, where Arasan went down in a sudden tactical defeat to Postmodernist. [Event "?"] [Site "?"] [Date "2000.11.14"] [Round "?"] [White "PostModernist"] [Black "Arasan 6.0"] [Result "1-0"] [ECO "C24"] [WhiteElo "2451"] [BlackElo "2505"] [TimeControl "1200+5"] 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d3 d6 4. Nc3 g6 5. Nf3 Bg7 6. Be3 c6 7. d4 exd4 8. Qxd4 O-O 9. O-O-O Nd5 10. e5 Nxc3 11. Qxc3 d5 12. Bb3 Bf5 13. h4 Bg4 14. Qb4 Qc8 15. Qf4 Bxf3 16. Qxf3 a5 17. Qf4 b5 18. a4 bxa4 19. Qxe7 Qxf4+ 35. Kb1 Qf5+ 36. Ka2 Rf8 37. Qxh4+ Kg8 38. Rg1+ Kf7 39. Qxd4 Ke8 1-0 It looks to me like Black should avoid 29 .. Qxg4. Analysis by Crafty agrees: Crafty eventually switches to Qe6, but it takes a *long* time. And after 30 minutes it still thinks both moves have a positive score, so it doesn't see a storm coming .. yet. Note that 30. Rxh7+ is only a temporary sacrifice: White both gets his material back and gets the attack, too. My guess is that both Crafty and Arasan don't easily see the material coming back. I do a lot of forward pruning and I think a lot of the lines after Rxh7+ are getting chopped. Plus there are a lots of checks once the two queens are on the open board, so there might be some extension blowup too. At move 31, Arasan's score goes negative after 12 plies and at 15 plies hits -0.73, so it is getting a good whif of danger, although not enough to switch to an alternative move. It still doesn't think it's lost but it might already be at this point. --Jon
