Get the book "chess skill in man and machine" by P. Frey
There is a wonderful article on the Northwestern program that is must
reading for this kind of basics.  There is also stuff on the web.

As far as I know there is lot's of scattered material.  There are
many books on computer chess but they tend to not get into the
nitty gritty details.  The ICCA Journal is a great source of
information too.  Go to a library and check these out.  You may
also want to get a subscription.
