Just figured out :) I looked into the source code and found out that it only
looks at the current directory and tries to open the file in read/write mode.
Since the book was installed into a system directory, the program was neither
able to access it, nor open it in read/write mode. I guess the authors intended
each user to be have a local copy (learning perhaps?).
