Hey! What is going on here? Recently I deleted Rebel9 from my hard disk for the following reasons: 1. It took up too much space - I have Chess Genius5, Fritz5, Chess Base 6.0, and Chess Menter, so something had to go. 2. It is a Dos program, so I decided I preffered Windows programs for the most part, and so again Rebel9, which I have invested several hundred dollars in over the years as part of my chess addcition had to go. 3. I'm spending a lot of time reading these news groups, so I decided to be practical and put this one in the closet - My hard disk needs space for stuff like Browsers and Norton Utilities, never mind the chess programs. O.K., so one day I got bored again and just before I reinstalled Rebel9 on the hard drive, I said to myself, said I, 'Hey, why not try out that Rebel Decade 2.0 thingy?!' - And so I downloaded and installed it. To my great surprise Rebel Decade 2.0 is no simple trial version of a chess playing program - It is a full featured playing program with a large variety of features and a very human playing style that is very entertaining, and which still beats me every time on my 200MzH MMX computer. And in fact, unlike its big brother, it did not crash even once on me, in the windows enviremont! It is no joke, and it is completely free to anyone with an Internet connection. I found myself thinking, if I wasn't such a chess program junky, and I could have this program, I might never have bought the full program, especially as it is a Dos program. Of course not buying Rebel9 would have been a great disservice to Ed Schroder and his Rebel company, but still, FREE is a great deal!, and not every one feels that chess companies should be rewarded for their fine efforts, like I do. And so, I found myself a little resentfull toward people who just download Rebel Decade and who of course can be completely satisfied with such a full-featured program, without spending a dime! - Anyway, Am I crazy to feel this way, or does Ed really think the advertising pages that display before (and after) you start playing are really going to be effective in selling the full Rebel 9. Or am I wrong about the average cheap-bastard computer chess playing public? And now I see news that Rebel Decade will soon be available on CD with additional book moves, games and other utilities for a measly $5! - Well, I hope that when that happens, Rebel 9 or other Rebel product owners are the only ones to get that price! People who have never bought a Rebel product in the past (IMHO), should have to pay a lot more for this brilliant software! Lawrence Tamarkin mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
