No you *weren't* elected to stop people from venting ideas that they don't understand. You are elected to stop people from using abusive language, insults and (very) off topic subjects. So you should have said: "as moderator I tell you please stop because this is very off topic" as it was very off topic. Instead you said "as moderator I tell you to stop this thread because you don't know a thing about the subject you're talking about." If you want to moderate, stick to moderation rules, if you want to silence people because they're telling nonsense, stick to normal discussion rules.
