Go up one level in this thread
I am not sure, what the message of these arguments/posts are:
1. There are too many stupid people writing in CCC
solutions: a) propose a test to get an account for CCC, including tests
about alpha/beta algorithm, a 1000 line test program in C, and
an ELO over 2000
b) do not visit CCC
c) do only read posts from smart people
2. The conversations here are sometimes not high end like:
my opinion: for most people reading and writing in CCC chess is more hobby than
profession. So, why not sometimes talking about things, that turn out to be
nonsense after some minutes/hours/days. Nobody is forced to attend such
discussions.
3. Testing computer chess programs is useless unless you have 10000s of games
my opinion: I am not sure (or better ignorant) how many games count for the ELO
rating of grandmasters. But I guess they are less than 10000 per player (please
correct me if I am wrong). But nobody will claim that the ELO rating of GM are
useless. Finally, I think that smart people can judge results (small number of
games, unequal hardware, ponder off, autoplayer, special tests etc.) between two
programs - and can ignore them if necessary.
4. Good ideas only can come from professional computer chess programmers - all
other should shut up.
my opinion: since I am working in the research community (not in computer
chess!), I know that sometime ideas from people, who know nothing (or better:
only something) from the field are not well focused. BUT: sometime good, new,
innovative ideas come from exactly those people. Of course, not in form of a C
or assembler code, or ...
It is the job of professionals in this area to make working solution from
vague ideas. I think, any innovation started sometimes from a vague idea. I am
not sure, whether you two are chess programmers, but I am glad that such
comments on "vague ideas" are not from programmers like Stefan MK.
5. There are arrogant personalities here in CCC:
I totally agree.
Thanks,
Joachim
