It is called a social satire. Yes, it has a sting, but the sting is not aimed at the stepchild. Not even at the step-parents, but at the culture which promotes such "values" (which lead to the proliferation of step-children) as valid "alternative life-styles" worthy not only tolerating but "embracing" and "celebrating." That's who the sting aims at, and those the most stung will complain the most. It is a guilt inducing satire and the guilty, predictably, got very itchy when reminded of their hypocrisy. > But since this is not the place to start a child abuse or > family rights discussion, the metaphor doesn't belong... There is a long tradition of such colorful stinging satire in chess clubs, pouring out during "friendly" games. Some of it is bound to overflow a bit here, in the computer chess club, where lots of the same folks visit. I don't see this as a "child abuse discussion" but rather a questioning on how much stalinism is beneficial in here (they used to put in jail folks satirizing the ruling social dogmas). Whatever your politics, though, there is always such a thing as too much of a good thing (even the PeeCee stalinism). The satirical metaphor didn't waste on its own any more bandwidth than any other proposed substitutes would have. It was the guilt induced protests of the pious and the subsequent politically colored moderation which produced the actual bandwidth waste.
