One of the reasons the FICS version of GNU chess grading increases is that the maintainer is trying out a 1Ghz Pentium III machine rather than a 100MHz Pentium (IIRC). The code seems also to be getting stronger but not as quickly as the rating suggests. The eval function has had some major changes and I suspect needs some polishing before release. It's endgame play is 'interesting' rather than strong I think - sometimes it seems inspired sometimes the opposite.
